Retrospected Multimedia 7 inch by Charly Fasano and Lucero
Check out this multimedia 7 inch record by Charly Fasano and Memphis’ Lucero. It’s a multimedia project that includes poetry recordings, films, block prints and more.
“Retrospect/ed” is a multimedia collaboration of storytelling, music, block printing and film created by poet and artist Charly Fasano and Memphis, Tennessee’s Lucero. Initially released in 2014, it is available as a 7 inch vinyl record that includes an illustrated book, mp3 download code, and hand pulled block print. This release is limited to a hand numbered, 500 copy vinyl pressing and is still available and can be purchased by clicking SHOP HERE
Produced by Lucero drummer Roy Berry and engineer Chris Scott in Memphis, Tennessee, Retrospect/ed features Fasano reading the poems “Gasoline Fumes” and “Teddy’s Bowling Alley” accompanied by the music of Lucero. The whole project is an examination of memory from two age perspectives. Accented by Brian Venable’s sliding guitar riffs and Rick Steff’s soulful organ play, “Gasoline Fumes” is Fasano’s account of traveling and learning about life as a kid from the window of his family’s van. “Teddy’s Bowling Alley” brings out Lucero’s upbeat Memphis sound and is told from the perspective of an old legend conjuring stories about his favorite bowling alley moments before its demolition.
This project is a reunion between the members of Lucero and Charly “the city mouse” Fasano. In 2008 they recorded a spoken word EP in Memphis during an ice storm at 1372 Overton Park and Yella Brick Studios in Memphis and released it as a limited 7 inch.
The cover art for the record is was painted by our own Vincent Cheap.

Some nice words about the project:
Onion A.V. Club
“Titled Retrospect/ed, the collaboration is, at its core, a 7-inch record that features Fasano reading two pieces of poetry, “Gasoline Fumes” and “Teddy’s Bowling Alley,” over Lucero’s slinky, atmospheric instrumentals (which sound completely out of the band’s comfort zone, and are intriguing because of it). But it also comes with beautiful lyric book; Fasano’s striking, linocut block prints (oh, yeah, he’s a visual artist, too); and the obligatory digital download that all the kids demand with their vinyl nowadays. It’s even hand-numbered and limited to 500 copies. It makes for an immersive experience, and so much more evocative than just another poetry chapbook.” Jason Heller, Onion A.V. Club
Here’s the rest of the review right here for you:
No Depression Magazine
". . . another facet of creativity from the boys of Lucero, as well. Venable and Steffʼs soulful wizardry provides a perfect backdrop for Fasanoʼs compelling, poignant, and at times humorous narratives of memory and change." Eric Chasko No Depression Magazine

In addition to the recordings, Fasano (a.k.a. “the city mouse”) created a multimedia experience by creating twenty-two linocut block prints and two short films that illustrate and complement the poems throughout the book. How did he put movies in a book, you ask? Well, he placed QR Codes in the book that folks can scan with a smart phone or tablet to quickly access the films and recordings.!
Side 1: Gasoline Fumes
Gasoline Fumes Film
Gasoline Fumes was created by Fasano and Roy Berry by simply filming out the window while on the road with cellphones and other simple digital cameras. Simple.
This film was selected and screened at:
Wanderlust Travel Film Festival 2014 in Jaisalmer, India
Gasoline Fumes Block Prints
Side 2: Teddy’s Bowling Alley
Teddy’s Bowling Alley Film
The film for Teddy’s Bowling Alley was completely constructed with block prints on paper, drawings, fishing line, markers and even more paper that Fasano had laying around. It was shot and edited on a Google Nexus 7 tablet with various free apps. The total budget with the tablet and supplies combined scaled the unthinkable amount of $180.00 USD.
It was entered and screened at the following film festival throughout 2014 and 2015:
2014 Lowcountry Short Film Festival, Charleston, South Carolina
2014 Machimina Expo 7 Animation Festival - Jury Prize
2015 Blackbird Film Festival - Cortland, New York
2014 No Budget Film Festival - Los Angeles, California

Glass Brick Walls
Follow the glass brick walls.
Noonish sun screams at the flicker
of a peeling Old Style sign.
Don’t talk to me
while the jukebox plays my jams.
Fuck off get the fuck on.
Flat draft daily special washing
the part of my brain
where spray paint fumes creep
and I hide my foil hat overdrive.
Clearance schnapps tastes like mintish mouth rinse.
Better than bleach.
The swish of 1000 razor blades.
Clean as it ever gets.
Better lose my sense of smell.
This is a snort and blow kind of joint.
Regret can’t fill a shot glass.
Whiskey won’t cure clap.
Same scene different decorations.
Thirsty home of could have
maybe and only if.
Maneuver the vague vogue.
Quiet lumber in the background mingle.
Same plaid slouch in every pub and package store.
Flannel shirts with barstool legs
dented beer can hands
bottle cap eyes that click when they blink.
On a mission of customized decline.
The red button next to every ashtray
does it destroy any and every
or just me?
Tales of Any Every: Poem - Granny’s Reading Glasses by Charly Fasano
Join Charly Fasano by peaking into what 1990s Denver, Colorado was like for a young thrash metal fan making his way to Wax Trax Records to flip through zines and be scene on the scene.
If Charly Fasano’s book N.E. Every had a title track or a featured single this would be it. This is a very Denver poem and presents the feel of growing up in Cow Town during the 1990s-ish. Copies of N.E. Every are available now by clicking HERE.
This poem along with excerpts of a couple of other poems are included in Fasano’s spoken word/ storyteller album entitled Granny’s Reading Glasses. Take a listen while you read along.
Granny’s Reading Glasses
The Denver sun is a close talker.
Taking shade under a trucker hat that says
I’m not trash I’m thrash.
32 ounces of ice cold cola and whiskey in a styrofoam cup.
On 13th avenues skinny sidewalk
slow walk and sip down to Wax Trax
to buy 45s and flip through zines.
Blasting a Testament cassette tape
through broken headphones.
His Walkman’s duct taped together
works alright if the batteries don't fall out.
Looking at Denver
through the peach tint
of his dead granny’s reading glasses.
He lived with his grandmother through most of high school.
She tried her best to take away his heavy metal music
so he drank everything in her liquor cabinet
during the summer of 1992.
Granny would watch television and scratch
at word puzzles in the kitchen after dinner.
Nightly News and her cursing bounced down the hall
while he poured all her booze into plastic soda bottles
then replaced it all with colored water.
He was restricted for 60 days.
Granny grounded him for blaming society for everything
and telling Youth Pastor Jimmy to go fuck himself.
So every Friday night he stayed home
listened and watched Granny and her silver shrinking friends
act drunk after a couple waters and colas.
Denver’s sun is a close talker
taking shade under a trucker hat that says
I’m not trash I’m thrash.
32 ounces of ice cold cola and whiskey in a styrofoam cup.
Siping down to Wax Trax to buy 45s and flip through zines.
Hiss and squiggles of analog
sound good enough
shitty good
better than he can remember.
Wearing a sunburn instead of a shirt.
Looking at Denver through the peach tint
of his dead granny’s reading glasses
wondering how he got here in the third place.
